![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() "Because we have a more diverse staff, we're able to represent a more diverse set of opinions…or even topics," says Black. ![]() Full Frontal blends the now-traditional format of late-night comedy news shows like The Daily Show and Last Week Tonight with a point of view informed by the many women and people of color that make up its staff. That out-of-the-box thinking extends to how the show tackles pressing political issues like immigration, reproductive rights, and, of course, the recent election. "Had they not done a process where they wanted to reach out.and read packets from people without representation, I just never would have gotten in the door." " the hiring process happens in this closed bubble.and that little pool of people is very white and very male," says writer and correspondent Ashley Nicole Black, who came to Full Frontal after working at Chicago's Second City theater. In addition to being one of the only late-night shows hosted by a woman on any network or streaming service (there's also Chelsea Handler's Chelseaon Netflix three nights a week), Full Frontal has been applauded for picking its staff from outside the usual networks and inviting new talent into the ranks of the often hard-to-crack late-night TV scene. ![]()

Sunny darted out of the way, and they circled each other, feinting and jabbing. “Yaaaaaaah!” Clay shouted, lunging forward with his rock claw. Without the poisonous barb other SandWings had, Sunny’s tail was not very menacing. ![]() She stamped forward, spread her wings, and raised her tail threateningly. “And other annoying scavenger noises! I’m here to steal treasure away from a magnificent dragon!” “Not from me, you won’t,” Sunny said, bristling. Even Tsunami was making faces like she was trying not to laugh. “Rargh! What is this tiny scavenger doing in the Kingdom of Sand? I am not afraid of tiny scavengers! I shall go out there and eat him in one bite!” Glory started giggling so hard she had to lie down and cover her face with her wings. “You’re not scared! You’re Queen Oasis, the big, bad queen of the sand dragons.” “R-right,” Sunny said. “Did someone say treasure?” Clay bellowed, leaping out from behind a large rock formation. “It’s probably because of all my treasure! I have so much treasure because I’m such an important queen!” She swept the rocks toward her and gathered them between her talons. ![]() “No one dares challenge me for my throne! I am the strongest SandWing queen who ever lived!” “Don’t forget the treasure,” Tsunami hissed, pointing at a pile of loose rocks. “I’ve been queen for ages and ages,” Sunny went on. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Where Wells wrote a series of four stories that each gave a snapshot of emotional development and then kept them in separate novellas to let them stand on their own and build on each other, Yang has written those separate stories and put them all in one book. In some ways, this is the opposite of the cool technique that Martha Wells used for her first four Murderbot novellas. But chaining those extended short stories together into one novel didn’t feel like it created the narrative cohesion I wanted. Each section felt like an extended short story about that time period in our POV character’s life. Part of my sense of being narratively adrift grew from the way in which the book is divided into sections, with each section separated from the last by a big temporal gap. The book certainly seems to have worked better for other people than it did for me. ![]() ![]() I’m not sure how much my perspective has been shaped by that prolonged delay, and I can only recommend that you take my review with a grain of salt or three. But that means that I’m writing this from an odd place. I suspect that the biggest cause for that was my own fault: I put the book down about halfway through, and then took over a month to return to it and finish it. The Black Tides of Heaven, by Neon Yang, left me feeling a little narratively unmoored. The insidious way that Il Duce was able to create his dictatorship predates the rise of Hitler in Germany, though their stories possess remarkable parallels. The reader is taken inside the papacy in incredible detail, exposing the Vatican’s inner workings, from the Pope’s schedule to what he kept on his desk, to the knife’s-edge particulars of dealing with Mussolini. Whether or not it was truly a partnership is suspect, but they undoubtedly needed each other’s cooperation. The 2002 public release of the archives of Pius XI’s papacy revealed a trove of historical treasures that Brown University professor Kertzer (The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara) found “irresistible.” He brings to life an intriguing and unlikely alliance of two powerful individuals, using extensive primary sources from both sides. ![]() ![]() So if you haven’t read any of Taylor Jenkins Reid books, I highly recommend you do.
